What's around the corner?
on life as a little dog
It’s my job to walk the dogs at night.
Many nights, it’s the last thing I do before going to bed. Some nights, I fall asleep and walk them in the dark after midnight. Some nights?
We walk early.
When we walk determines where we walk. Just before bed, the loops are moderate. We trot around the block. I typically take a route so we encounter as few people or animals as possible. They tend to flip out from time to time and avoiding that is a great strategy.
On a late night / post midnight walk we make it to the mail box. Rodney moves quickly and wants to return home. Ronin stalls, sniffing everything and feigning having a shit in between sniffs. When we walk early, things are different.
When we walk early, Rodney tells us where we’re going. He likes to lead. He’s a proud little guy. He has his favorite walks. His rump rumbles as he rambles along.
Even though they know where they’re going and they know what comes next, they walk with purpose. They walk with urgency. It’s like their little toe…
