What are you looking at?
on protesting too much
When you look at yourself in the mirror dear reader, what do you see?
Essentially, are you ‘happy’ with how you show up?
This fool usually finds a black head or blemish. Some are older than my kids and still going strong. I will need to be careful and keep Exxon away from my face.
We spend a lot of time working on how we’re seen. Whether it’s the hat on our head, dress up trucks or the clothes that we drive, it seems we’d love to control how other people see us.
It’s like each and every one of us has our own PR department.
The remote parts of rural Nova Scotia are no different.
Carl Hubley is no different.
Take this advertisement from the Eastern Shore Cooperator for example.:
The photo isn’t perfect so I’ll transcribe it:
Notice
I Carl Hubley, wish to clear up the assumption (rumour) that I jack deer.
I have never jacked deer and have offered to take a polygraph test about this and my character. At this point it has never been requested.
I find this very upsetting and feels compelled to address this matter

I dunno about you dear reader, but, I suspect that were we to go and visit dear Carl for dinner, we’d find plaid jacket hung by the door and wood paneling on the walls. There may be a car part or two beside the kitchen sink.
One thing is for sure, venison would be on the menu.
The hunter doth protest too much.
You can convince some of the people some of the time,
But if you’ve convinced yourself?
We’re all screwed.
