Eddie’s intense.
He’s my kind of guy.
He plays hard. He pushes the boys.
He’s all in when it comes to his love of soccer and dedication to helping young men emerge.
He’s my son’s coach.
He’s solid. Good. Strong and just fucking so stoked to be alive.
The boys played a game where they were losing badly. The other team was dominant. They gave up. Afterwards Eddie told them that those other young men - NEEDED to win where Eddie’s team? They merely wanted to win.
(did I mention that I really like how Eddie operates)
First, he kicked their asses. Give up when you’re losing? Stop running in the game? Get ready to run.
And run they did.
No one threw up (as far as I know)
(though I do hope this happens soon)
And then?
Eddie told them they had to write a paragraph about why they need to succeed.
At home, it resulted in a long conversation about the difference between wanting and needing and stripping needs down to something really basic.
As well, we spent a lot of time trying to define success.
In the past, I’ve wanted to succeed.
Now? I NEED to.
Odd for a clown to need to succeed - when ‘failure’ and recovery is the art.
But then things turn to question we all need to define with those closest to us: What is success
My son’s soccer assignment caught me off guard.
NEED vs want as related to ideas, experiences and metrics of success…
There’s something DESPERATE about NEED. Need is animal. There’s something winsome about wanting.
When you’re desperate, you’re all in - it’s almost like life or death!
Or,
When it comes to earning a living it is life or death!
I was remembering early successed. Doing something well makes me feel alive and full of energy. Many, regular successes, small victories, little wins. One foot in front of the other.
After hundreds of swings of my axe, that stump broke open. Sure I was successful in breaking the stump up. More important than the success of breaking open the stump was noticing the strength of my back and shoulders. The work that leads to succes makes me feel powerful.
Holy shit!
Thanks to my son’s soccer coach, my tires are full and I’m ready to roll.
It was a kind of ‘buy one, get one free, non therapy therapy intervention’.
I seems to me that, if you listen carefully enough to the world it will tell you what you need to hear when you need to hear it.
There’s something inevitable about a need.
And if you match a need with a need?
Magic
