Monoculture is boring.

The standards we’ve set for how we keep our homes is boring. Professional landscapers tend to practice monoculture. When they don’t they love vegetative apartheid. Sure, you’ll find some mix of flowers. As colourful garden elites, they love the attention.

The lawn though? The blades of grass are the dirty filthy, ugly masses kept clean and uniform. If a lawn were people, most lawn care professionals believe in ethnic cleansing.

Most of all though, a well kept lawn is a mask. Though we attempt through the ‘curb appeal’ of our house to present ourselves as confident, compliant, neighbourly and welcoming, a perfect lawn is a sure sign of neurosis.
