Ah the helmets.

So many stories of “oh my helmet saved my life.

So many crazy accidents without helmets.

I remember riding full throttle down dollar lake road, downhill, empty flat road, we were probably going over 30kph

Rocketing along, chatting, racing

Then suddenly there were like meter wide cookie cutter holes in the road, maybe 5cm deep?

First one was a surprise but we were going so fast it didn’t matter.

Probably lost a bit of control before the second one.

Wipeout. A ball of dust. I was wearing a jean jacket with the arms rolled up. That was my weak spot. I still have a scar on my elbow. Head was fine.

Could’ve gone differently but it didn’t.

There’s an argument in these parts that bike helmets make CAR DRIVERS less careful.

The horrors of getting squished or twisted by a cornering truck omg perhaps a helmet might have been irrelevant.

The worst thing about this freedom is you know: one mistake, one careless motorist, and they’ll say: oh but he wasn’t wearing a helmet.

Kid died a few weeks ago, 17 I think, running a red light at midnight between parties, taken out on the crosswalk by another kid in a car making a left. Thar be scars.

Yeah be reckless and lucky out there eh?
