I had a teacher / supervisor / instructor back in therapy school who suggested that I have accountability issues. This was directed towards me as though it was a problem somehow. What was implied in her grousing at me was that this could / should be something for me to explore. According to this odd little shaman lady, this was something that I needed to change.

She believed that I was reckless. She wanted me to be more cautious. By telling me that I had ‘accountability issues’ she was attempting to provide me with fear. My response was clear.

No thanks has always been my approach to accountability. It’s not something that I’m at all interested in. Accountability is about standards. Accountability is something that is done to a person from a community, group, profession or something like that. Ditching my credential where I could be evaluated by a jury of my peers is an act of escaping accountability. I can hear the panic now: Without accountability, then what?
