Not eating pigs is a technology.

So is the stoning of an adulterer.

Not coveting your hot neighbour’s ass?

That’s a technology too.

And this passage:

In the beginning, there was the word… the word was made flesh and lived among us

That’s a technology too.

It’s interesting to contrast that technology with this one:

In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.1

In the first version, we explain what cannot be explained by words, coming alive by magic, becoming embodied and walking amongst us. Language was seen as a miracle.

In the second version, the earlier version of the story, this thing that we poorly explain is being described as 'a spirit’ and that there was a void. There were also waters too. Perhaps like my dad’s Ford hybrid, that book needs to be taken in for a factory recall.
