Not eating pigs is a technology.

So is the stoning of an adulterer.

Not coveting your hot neighbour’s ass?

That’s a technology too.

And this passage:

In the beginning, there was the word… the word was made flesh and lived among us

That’s a technology too.

It’s interesting to contrast that technology with this one:

In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.¹

In the first version, we explain what cannot be explained by words, coming alive by magic, becoming embodied and walking amongst us. Language was seen as a miracle.

In the second version, the earlier version of the story, this thing that we poorly explain is being described as 'a spirit’ and that there was a void. There were also waters too. Perhaps like my dad’s Ford hybrid, that book needs to be taken in for a factory recall.
