My daughter asked when I was going to repair the hole in the ceiling.

I hope to get to it this week, I replied.

Later that night she started the shower. It wasn’t long before the kitchen was doing its best imitation of Niagara Falls.

Shit.

My repair job on the shower above the kitchen did not hold.

I guessed wrong.

What I thought was a friction fit joint was not a friction joint. It was one in dire need of glue.

My face and the kitchen below this joint were both in dire need of a towel.

An error fixing one problem led to another one.

One part of the plumbing assembly was a mystery.

I could either glue this joint or not.

I chose not.

I chose wrong.

Sure, I could have done my homework and actually learned how these things are supposed to go together.

Or, I could learn experientially.

This is usually how I do things.

The difference is merely a bit of water and a shower that doesn’t work for another day.
