When we’re dissatisfied with our work, frequently I hear people talk about ‘going back to school’ and retraining.
Retraining in the old, unimaginative subjects.
My work sucks, maybe I’ll go back and get a Phd..
My work sucks, maybe I’ll go back and learn a medical profession
My work sucks, maybe I’ll go back and go to law school.
These are really unimaginative responses to a complex problem.
They are simple to discuss because the process and timelines are all kwon.
When we don’t like what we’re doing and don’t know what to do next, these known, certain paths have a soothing appeal.
When we seek to change, what do we really need though?
Soothing or support to face a challenge?
Do we need the edge of anxiety shaved off our souls, or do we need the energy of not knowing to propel us forward?
Is school a place to transform?
Sometimes.
Often though, more qualifications and the suspended consequences that come with being there, school becomes a comfortable, known, defined place to hide.
