There are days dear reader,
Where I travel with people to the cemetery where Titanic Zombies will rise from
Zombie Joseph Dawson will rise from he grave and dance with Zombie Kate Winsalot when Jimmie Cameron creates his next masterpiece.
Until then?
I’ve gotta figure out creative ways to talk about the Titanic in order to make it memorable for people who last watched Jimmie Cameron’s movie almost thirty years ago.
It’s not that difficult really. At this point, I could spend hours going on about that incredible luxury boat.
It’s not difficult to get cruise ship passengers to think about the ocean.
If you’re on a ship, there’s a large chance that you have some affinity for the water.
Or at least that’s what a fool like me might think.
And discussing the Titanic?
Well,
It doesn’t take very long to come to the understanding that it’s kinda miraculous that we even exist, let alone here and now in this age.
The number of improbable events that led to the Titanic’s sinking is truly staggering.
Early this week at the Titanic cemetery, I was discussing just this fact when a slight man in front of me spoke up softly.
My grandfather was supposed to be on the Titanic. He was late. It left without him.
I amplified his voice ant the group was silent.
They were transformed.
How couldn’t you be?
We were in a cemetery in early fall at dusk. It was cold. There were leaves blowing around all over the place and the air was as close to icy as it could get without making a baby.
I spoke up underlining the point:
Look around. Take each other in. We are all here together with a man whose sheer existence is a miracle. He’s here by mistake…
I smirked.
They tipped very well that day.
I came home and told my wife about it.
Dummy. My great grandfather was supposed to be on the Titanic too - traveling from Norway. The only reason he didn’t get on was because he had a head cold.
Fuck. The only thing stopping my children from coming into existence was a head cold?
That seemed pretty fucked to me.
Laura shook her head at me.
You don’t remember or were you not paying attention?
My reply came quickly,
I dunno love. Back then? I was just doing whatever I could to get in you pants.
