Make life a buddy movie
make it dumb, make it dumber
What’s your favourite genre of film dear reader?
I likes me a buddy movie.
What’s not to love about a couple of bumbling idiots finding their way against all odds and coming out on top?
It’s a romance novel for weirdos and fuck ups of every type.
And the best buddy movie of all time?
Dumb and Dumber.
One of my favourite scenes is the montage of them crossing the Rockies on a cord pull start mini bike.
Every buddy movie needs a good montage. Since I likes me a buddy movie, I loves me a buddy movie montage.
Upbeat, outrageous and full of hope, the buddy movie montage is always hilarious and frequently inspiring.
In Dumb and Dumber’s cinematic masterpiece, Harold and Lloyd’s journey through the Rockies is compressed into a three minute montage.
What took hours and was likely unendurable cold and painful gets reduced to a bit of frivolity set to an indie rock beat.
My god, there are so many days that I wish that I could merely montage my life.
Skip over the greasy bits, the burning bits an d those bits that involve scooping out kitty litter?
Hell yeah.
Dance past insecurity with a push up and a wink all with a sense of inevitable forward progress?
Where do I sign with blood to have access to this magic?
Would you not enjoy having magic montagerie powers, dear reader?
Each day out with Ricky feels like an adventure into the familiar.
It’s really quite absurd.
Tuesdays feel like Fridays and Wednesdays get mistaken for Mondays.
It seems that when you’re on the road for so long, the days of the week are having their names changed.
This delivery work is a grind. It’s a meaningless grind.
But so is a road trip.
And a buddy movie.
We don’t get to skip the grinding that comes with living life like it’s an adventure.
Instead, that’s where we can decide the genre.
Are we living in a grievance opera and dancing in a culture of complaint?
Or,
Is your life a buddy movie? Make it dumb. Make it dumber.
Simple people with idiotic dreams performing the impossible because “you’re saying there’s a chance”,
Choose absurdity.
Choose life.

Dude this Substack is montaging your life. It’s fine.
