I love whittling.

Most days when I’m alone, I whittle magic wands.

Never beginning with a plan in mind, I allow the variations in the wood to dictate what emerges. The knots, scars and twists in the grain - the apparent ‘imperfections’ inform the choices that I make with my knife.

When I have someone with me and I’m working as a counselor, I still whittle. Instead of magic wands though, I’m carving away at people’s magic wants.

The knots, scars and twists in their life worlds inform the choices I make in my approach to them.

We all have magical thinking and magical wants.

We want to be seen and noted but are afraid of being judged.

We want to be financially comfortable, but won’t stop spending money on clothes.

We want to get fit without the workout.

We want to have the new car without the payment.

We want to ride two horses with only one ass without cutting the ass off a third horse and lend it to one of the first two.

We want impossible things.
