When we plan rides, he sets the bar high as far as I can tell.
Well. We could either ride eighty or a hundred and sixty. I figure that the one sixty is a decent goal.
That’s fine when he’s dragging my arse around a trail. With civilians, it’s difficult to know how far they ride their bikes.
When I tell people that the Lake Charlotte Express is only 55k over loose rocks and graded gravel roads, they recoil.
I couldn’t ride that far, I’d die! I’m in terrible shape.
As someone with a skinny little body that’s under rested and poorly nourished, I can attest to the fact that if you merely make small circles with your feet all day while eating pretzels all day, you can not only do this ride, but it will be fun.
A marathon is 42k. People run those all the time. Sure they train. And the fast people do it in two hours. The mortals do it in five.
That’s the secret on these epic adventures: Slow and steady.

My longest so far was 200km over two days and the way was pretty flat and smooth. Still, tho my mates were less fit than I, I still recommend some prep cardio and padded bike shorts. Also I recommend the Moonsaddle but nobody other than me uses such a thing so whatev
