Among the tour guides that I know, there’s a lot of discussion.

Discussion around historical facts.

Discussion about innovations in our city.

Discussions about social justice.

These all seem to circle around What do you / should you include in your tours commentary?

People seem to think that people travel to be informed.

People travel to be transformed.

And the best way to do that is not by dazzling people with details of LEED certifications or how some new eco building uses rainwater to flush toilets.

The way to transform people is by impacting their bodies.

Biology is primary.

Biology determines who we are and how we live.

And when you affect people on a physical level you have a much longer lasting impact than merely telling them about a building.

As such,

The stories and facts that I share on a tour need to lead to something that makes people laugh or makes them cry.

Beyond that?

It’s just filler.
