Last week I took the longest bike ride of my life.
Though I wasn’t prepared, I managed to move in a way that allowed me to grind through a hundred kilometer off road bike ride.
My latest ride was merely thirty two kilometers.
In comparison to the previous week, thirty kilometers felt like a breeze. In fact, I found myself home wishing I had pushed myself harder somehow.
I missed the exhaustion and pain from the prior week. Most of all though, I missed the sense of accomplishment that came from doing something that wasn’t yet possible.
In both cases, looking at pace was important.
On the hundred kilometer ride we averaged 9.6km / hour.
On the thirty kilometer ride we averaged 11.2km/ hour.
My effort level didn’t change much.
The long ride needed me to work with a slow pace just to finish.
Thirty kilometers though? That’s easy.
