digging up memories
lessons from my unusual friend, Slams Whammie
Slams had the best smile. He played guitars and smashed them. I met him touring the country back in 95’. We were part of this outfit that performed a show and facilitated workshops about the hopes and concerns of Canadian Youth back in 1995.
Slams Whammie had ‘it’. He was funny. He was charismatic, imaginative, intelligent and kind. Then? He’d invent some game that put every dudes nuts at risk. It didn’t matter what we were doing, Slams would create some odd game where you’d flick pennies at someone’s balls or have the right to hit someone in the nuts every time they used a certain word or noticed a certain brand name. Slams Whammie was a man who liked hitting other men in the nuts.
Slams wanted: ‘to get paid. to think’.
He went into media copywriting and was quite brilliant. He’s quite brilliant. And really damn weird. My dad still talks about him. Not because of any sack smack bag tag games. He brings up Juicy because of what Juicy loved to do.
Slams loved to dig. I just love to dig.
