Of course there was water. Once I dug six inches, the cracks between the cinder blocks were a quarter inch wide. It’s a small wonder the basement hadn’t flooded in earlier storms.

We’ve had a bit of a rainy spell around these parts. For some it washed out their road. Others lost bridges. Us? A section of basement floor had to come up.

That, and a quick inspection of the foundation revealed that we had have a bigger problem than we thought. The foundation is made from cinder blocks. The masonry between them was cracked and falling away.

For some this would be a big problem. As a remarkable fool? This is an opportunity. I now get the joy of digging a three foot deep, two foot wide trench that’s about a hundred and twenty feet long.

I get to do this.

I could never understand lifting something for the sake of lifting something. Lifting shovels full of gravel to repair a foundation? That make sense. Smashing…
