When Hilly Kristal opened CBGB’s he liked quiet music. He intended on featuring Country, BlueGrass and Blues - hence the name.

Hilly liked quiet music. He played violin. He loved classical. He loved jazz.

Hilly didn’t want rock and roll in his bar.

That didn’t last.

In 1974, just a year after it opened, Hilly made a decision he resisted. The decision was necessary. For this situation - where Hilly’s Country, BlueGrass and Blues bar was at the heart of an emerging trend in the New York rock scene, Hilly had to decided to let rock bands play.

In August of that year, The Ramones played their first gig.

The rest is rock and roll history.

And Hilly’s decision?

That was an ‘ad hoc’ decision.

It was ‘to this’ or ‘with respect for this specific purpose’.

Hilly’s big purpose was to support original music. No ‘cover bands / tribute bands
