No one lives forever you know.
My nanny and I sat in the sunshine on the swing that the family bought for her.
One of these days, I’m going to wake up dead.
The sun was shining and my nanny and I were having another one of those conversations.
You know, those conversations we have when we talk about life and what it means.
Does anyone really know why we’re here?
I smiled.
I’m here to swing with you.
She smiled back.
You ever think about what comes next, what happens after we die?
I replied that I try to but I don’t think we can know this until we get there.
That didn’t satisfy my Nanny.
I don’t sleep well though most nights. A lot of nights I come out here. It’s quite. It’s beautiful. I look up at all the stars and just wonder about why we’re here. How did all of this start and what comes next…
We sat for a while and let the late day sun warm our skin.
I just wonder what it’s going to be like. Nobody lives forever and I’m getting old you know.
I stayed a little longer before dashing back to the realities of the city. One of the kids needed a drive or some such nonsense.
As I pulled away, I realized what an opportunity that I missed when Nanny asked if I ever thought about what comes next.
Next time?
Next time I’ll say: What do you imagine you’ll find? If you could choose what it’s like on the other side, what would make it wonderful? What would make it even better?
Lucky for me that I expect to see her again soon.
I’ll let y’all know how it goes.
Until then?
Imagine what death might be like.
What would make it great?
And?
What might make it even better?
Stay morbid you fools!
